The Municipality has undertaken important initiatives in support of various social groups. Specifically, the Municipality has a Department of Social Policy, which promotes initiatives for the elderly. This Department of the Municipality conducts social surveys, plans, while simultaneously proposes and ensures the implementation of social policies or participate in activities designed to support the social care for the elderly, with the establishment and operation of legal persons, institutions and enterprises (e.g. open care centers and daily care centers, entertainment and leisure activities, nursing at home programs).
Furthermore, plans, proposes and ensures the implementation of social policies or participate in activities that aim to support the health of all citizens, including the elderly, as well as the establishment and operation of facilities for the provision of health services and the promotion of mental health (e.g. by creating municipal clinics, health education centers, mental health centers, occupational therapy centers, etc.). It also implements actions and programs of social policy in addition to the actions and programs of social policy implemented by the Entities of the Municipality. In this contex, the Municipality:
(A) conducts social surveys for the granting of welfare benefits,
(B) does social work with older people and their families,
(C) operates advisory units, psychological social support and occupational therapy and
(D) implements prevention and treatment programs of psychosocial and economic problems of the elderly
These actions are indicative of the Municipality’s social policies, which are directed not only to the inhabitants aged over 60 years old but also to other groups.
With its participation to the Covenant, the Municipality wishes to further refine its strategy in favor of creating a friendlier environment for the elderly. Specifically, the Municipality wants to create the appropriate infrastructure for easier access of the elderly, where they wish, more employment opportunities and better integration structures in the wider community in a more effective way and through appropriate programs which will overall promote their active aging.
